Ruth Waiganjo, a final year BSc in Computer Science student at the School of Computing and Informatics, emerged the winner of the top prize at the Transform Africa Summit 2017 held in Kigali, Rwanda, May 10 to 12. Ruth beat six finalists at the inaugural  Miss Geek Africa, a competition designed to inspire African girls to be part of solving the continent's challenges using technology and encourage them to choose a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Eight girls pitched their projects to a high level panel of judges and in front of hundreds of the delegates, including ICT, and business leaders, after which the jury chose five with prospective projects.

Before pitching, the finalists underwent a week-long intensive development programme to equip them with presentation, public speaking and critical thinking skills to ensure they are prepared for finals.

Ruth presented the Safe Driver App which gives actual time and data about accidents.  Ruth received her prize from the First Lady of Rwanda Mrs Jeanette Kagame at a glamorous ceremony that was attended by first ladies from Mali, Sao Tome and Principe, and Zambia.

The School of Computing and Informatics congratulates Ruth Waiganjo for this great achievement, in addition to others such being the Intel Student ambassador on campus.
