Mercy Orangi from Google, courtesy of Margaret Ondeng one of the mentors for female students at the School of Computing and Informatics, held a session May 24, 2017. Mercy graduated with BSc in Computer Science from KU and Master’s from Strathmore. She has had engagements with the students previously and is really passionate about empowering women. Mercy took the opportunity to encourage the first and second year students. There was a turnout of 21, including visitors from Multimedia University and Strathmore.

Mercy spoke about opportunities at google such as: Women Techmakers which has various benefits such as academic scholarship award of 7000EUR,an invitation to the scholars retreat in a google office and membership in a global Women Techmakers Scholars Networking. She highlighted the importance of the women Techmakers fellowship. These includes invaluable resources and opportunities. She mentioned Akirachix,women who code and many more women organizations that SCI students could be part of. She talked about Engineering students’ opportunities from Google - She emphasized on existing opportunities and urged the students to look them up and focus on finding and applying for them.
