Earlier this year my two other colleagues and I started a mentorship program at the university that has seen over 50 girls change their perspective about computer science and technology field at large. Our commitment and good work has been rewarding with each day having a new member into the community making us 59 ladies all in technology field.

Last month I was chosen the Women Techmakers for Google lead in Nairobi Province. I remember being asked by the google developer groups lead Sub-Saharan Africa whether I am ready and what kind of changes I would bring. Like many of us, I took a deep breath and said “with your help I believe I will make it”. I was not ready for sure. But I realized that it is being guided not being helped that I need. Having taken up the challenge much is expected of me not only in my university but also in all the ladies countrywide. I believe that I can do this. It is a great opportunity which I intent to use and bring even more change to my fellow ladies in STEM fields.

It has been a month since I became the lead and I have already had enough experience. Together with the other leads we held one great event at Strathmore University commonly known as I/O extended that came out very successful. We learned a lot as well as interacted with different people from different places. This is just the beginning of the many that we shall have.

With the help of many people I have been able to nurture my leadership skills and for this I will forever remain indebted to Dr. Wausi, Mr. Moturi our ICT director and Margaret Ondeng’ a software engineer at Immobia Mobile Tech for their continued support.
