The Faculty of Science & Technology congratulates distinguished alumnus Professor Robert Mokaya, OBE, FRS, on his appointment as President of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), becoming the first Black President in the Society's 185-year history.
Professor Mokaya assumed office on 8 July 2026, taking the helm of one of the world's leading scientific societies representing more than 60,000 chemical scientists across the globe. His election marks a significant milestone in international scientific leadership and reflects a career dedicated to advancing research, innovation and higher education.
A graduate of the University of Nairobi, Professor Mokaya earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1988 before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge. He is internationally recognised for his pioneering research in porous materials, sustainable energy technologies and materials chemistry, and currently serves as Provost and Deputy Vice-President at the University of Sheffield.
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Mokaya has received numerous honours in recognition of his contributions to science, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). His leadership within the global scientific community continues to inspire researchers and students across the world.
